In my last post about being successful, I shared with you why so many driven brokers never really feel successful.
I also promised you I would share with you how you can become — and truly feel — successful, literally in an instant.
Here’s how to do that….
Like I mentioned in my last post, most people don’t feel successful — despite all the things they accomplish in their lives — simply because their definition of success makes it almost impossible to achieve.
In reality, though, isn’t feeling successful just that — a feeling?
It just so happens that for most people, a number of things must happen before they allow themselves to feel the feeling of being successful.
The truth is, you can feel successful any time you want to!
Let me prove it to you…
Can you remember back to a time when you were playing your favorite sport or game? A time when you were playing so well that you felt unstoppable, that you felt you were succeeding in the game? When you were just on fire and felt like you could take on the whole world?
Take a moment and put yourself in that memory. In your mind’s eye, really be in the moment and see all the action around you… listen to the sounds… remember how it felt to be in that moment.
Turn on the sounds and make them really noticeable. Make the colors in your memory movie brighter.
How do you feel now?
Don’t you feel stronger, more confident, and perhaps… more successful?
That’s my point!
You feel more successful because you remembered a time you were more successful… you gave your brain the instructions (recalling the memory) to feel more successful!
The truth is that you can feel successful in an instant, if you give your brain the right instructions (like recalling a memory of a past success) to feel successful.
And because you control the game, you have the power to decide — in an instant — when you feel successful!
The challenge most driven professionals (including commercial real estate brokers) face on a daily basis is that our definitions of success — the key to unlocking the feeling — is based on market conditions, deals dynamics, and money statistics we don’t control.
Is your definition of success something like this?
I feel successful when I have doubled my income compared to last year, and closed more deals than last year, and garnered more listings than last year.
This sort of definition depends on a lot of external factors that are out of your control.
So you’re at the mercy of something or somebody — like a leaf blowing in the wind — when it comes to feeling successful.
Luckily, you can avoid this problem very easily:
You must define success in a way such that:
(a) it depends on you and you alone,
(b) Can be easily achieved, and
(c) You can achieve it in every case any time you want.
Let’s see an example of what this would look like for the definition I gave above. You could replace that with something like this to fit the 3 criteria I just mentioned:
I feel successful when I have given my best effort in a situation, or when I learn something valuable from the experience, or improve my financial prospects in any way.
Do you see the difference?
I can feel successful, according to this definition, any time I want… feeling successful is easy, and pretty much guaranteed because it only depends on me!
So take a few minutes right now to decide on your own, new definition for success.
Make sure it fits the 3 criteria I listed above.
Also, be sure to use “or” instead of “and” in your definition.
You want to make it as easy as possible to feel successful… so when any of the conditions you listed are met, you can feel successful.
Once you have your new definition, it’s critical that you rehearse and integrate this definition into your psyche.
It needs to be ingrained in your mind… so it become automatic. When you think of success –> the definition pops up.
The easiest way to do this is to read your definition with emotional intensity several times a day.
Emotional intensity is key here… Remember the memory exercise we did just a minute ago? Use those emotions every time you read your new definition to give it the emotional juice it needs.
Write the definition on a 3×5 card and carry it around with you… Or write it in a note on your Blackberry, iPhone, or PDA, and read it several times a day.
Repetition is a must in this case.
And before you know it, it’s become your own!
Once you have created your own definition for success, post it here in a comment for other people to learn from.
May be something in your new definition will trigger a through in another reader’s mind…
Share your success and it will grow!
Here’s mine:
I am successful when I can bring value to my clients, make more money, and enjoy my work.
